How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

Celeste and Alex were not only incredibly talented but also genuinely lovely to be around. We got ready at the Hyatt House in West Loop, which isn’t the most spacious or salon-like spot for hair and makeup. But Celeste and Alex showed up early, fully prepared, and made the space work so seamlessly you’d think they set up there all the time. Everyone looked incredible and felt comfortable and confident, which set the tone for the whole day. Alex styled everyone’s hair, and she was just as amazing. At our trial, I had tighter waves than imagined, and I mentioned wanting something a little softer. On the day of, she adjusted the style to make the waves looser and added pearl accents that made it feel more romantic, and I loved it. It held beautifully all day and night through wind and nonstop dancing. My bridesmaids and mom also looked gorgeous, with styles that fit each person’s hair type and vibe. Alex was calm, focused, and incredibly efficient, but she never made anyone feel rushed. She cared about how everyone felt walking out of that chair. Catherine was a huge help behind the scenes with planning the schedule. She organized the timeline for hair and makeup so well that we stayed on track the entire morning without feeling on a timer. That kind of planning and attention to detail made the day run much more smoothly and let me enjoy the getting-ready part instead of stressing about timing. What made Windy City Glam stand out is how personal and supportive the whole experience felt. “I can’t say enough great things about Amber. From the get-go, she was so warm, welcoming and so very kind. Through email communication to our first trial, it felt so natural and fun and I felt like we clicked immediately. Our trial was fun and she made me feel very comfortable to express things that I liked, didn’t like, or things I may not have been comfortable with. I made a last minute color pallet change from our trial to wedding day and she was on board ready to go. My nerves were so high the day and she was able to pull me out of my anxiety and nervousness and allowed me to take any space or simply acted as a really wonderful sounding board as I was expressing any of my insecurities. She made me feel strong and beautiful and she kept her positive composure throughout the entire (long) morning. Her second artist, Sandra, was a saint and really rocked it. “Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening! Emily is amazing and so sweet and so communicative, I definitely recommend to anyone booking her!!”
