How much does hair and makeup cost for a wedding?

According to Thumbtack, wedding makeup artists cost $90–$475 per person on average in 2022. Here at Zola, we recommend putting aside around $300 for your own wedding hair and makeup. Services for wedding party members are generally less expensive, as the artist or stylist will spend less time perfecting the look. Be sure to have a transparent conversation with your wedding party if you expect them to cover their own costs.

How long does wedding hair and makeup take to do?

The more involved the look, the more time it will take. In general, allocate 60–90 minutes for your own looks and 30–45 minutes for each member of the wedding party. Extensions, extra thick hair, and intricate makeup all take longer. Communicating who (with pictures and descriptions) is getting what (again, with photos) to your stylists will help them plan an accurate timeline.

Who usually pays for hair and makeup for the wedding party?

Traditionally, whoever is asking for the services should pay. However, this may not be in the budget for every couple. If you’re planning on having your wedding party pay, be transparent when you first ask them to be in the wedding party itself. Then, they can choose whether it’s possible for them to participate.

A good rule of thumb is to tip 15–20%.

“My glam team was Monique and Michelle. They were amazing! It was great to get to meet them and work with them. We did a trial run and it was just beautiful and they accepted and wanted feedback from the trial. They asked for inspiration pictures and were able to achieve the look I was thinking of. As someone with naturally curly hair, looking for a hair stylist that understands and can make my hair look good was something important for me. Prior to wedding day, they asked for inspiration pictures from the bridesmaids. There were 7 girls getting hair and makeup or just one service. The stylist had schedules and we were able to have everyone done in time. We had a great morning with Michelle and Monique and we all looked so great all day long. The airbrush makeup is in fact cry proof. So glad to have found a glam team that was understanding, fun, professional, and amazing !”

“I have worked with Sophia for three weddings. As a bride and as a bridesmaid, Sophia made me look and feel like my best self. Sophia was a dream to work with during the planning process of my wedding. She was extremely organized and helped me to make sure that my day-of timeline was efficient. At my makeup trial, Sophia took her time and made sure I was happy with every detail of my makeup, pausing and checking in throughout the process. On the morning of my wedding, Sophia was prepared and punctual. Her calm presence in the busy room helped me to feel at ease and relaxed. As she did my makeup, we sang throwback songs together and laughed. When Sophia worked on family members that were less comfortable with certain parts of the makeup process, Sophia made them feel comfortable and safe with her. She assured everyone that they could try things, and if they didn’t like them they could change up the plan. She made both my mom and mother-in-law feel comfortable and confident trying false eyelashes for the first time. Sophia helped everyone feel beautiful and happy! Over the course of the year as we progressed through the three weddings, I got to know Sophia on a personal level. “Emily and her team were amazing! I did a lot of research before booking hair and makeup for my big day and came across Beauty by Emily and couldn’t have booked with her sooner! Starting at my trial, she made me so comfortable and even sent a prep sheet on how to best prep for this. She listened very intently to what I was saying I wanted and took the time to go through inspo photos I had saved to pick apart what I liked and disliked. After the trial, she was communicative leading up to the wedding day. On wedding day, she was very adaptable, as we had a small space to set up in and the room got very warm. They worked promptly to get my bridesmaids, myself, my mom and mother in law all pretty for the day of. Everyone’s hair and makeup lasted throughout the wind and the tears of the day. I felt extremely beautiful thanks to Emily and her team. She even included a bridal touch up kit which was so nice to have to refresh throughout the evening!
