Paint My Mind Photography

I’m Brittany, a laid-back, candid and colorful photographer in Kalamazoo, Michigan. I love working with ALL couples, but especially have a soft spot for non-traditional weddings. My gays, weirdos, ADHDers, D&D players- I'm your girl. Let's connect over our shared passions or fandoms- I'm a lover of all things spooky, Halloween, books, cats, oat milk lattes, Star Wars, and continuing education courses.

Awarded Best of Zola
I cannot more highly recommend Brittany and her team! I first worked with her when my friends and I hired her to for a surprise photo shoot for a friend's bachelorette. We had the best time walking around Three Oaks, MI, taking photos in front of cute buildings and murals, in a public community garden, on the steps of our rental house with a giant Batman balloon, and more. Brittany had tunes playing the whole time to keep an upbeat tone, and the photos were ones that captured the joy and meaning of lifelong friendships. My experience with her was so positive that when it was then time to find a photographer for my own wedding, she was my top choice. I was delighted to find out that even though she's based in Western, MI, she also does weddings in Chicagoland. We shared with her that our top priorities were taking pictures with our families, taking pictures as a couple in a way where we could just kind of walk around and interact with the environment and see what inspires us, and capturing the ceremony and reception. Brittany and her second photographer Liv more than delivered on our requests. Our photo shoot with our families was incredibly fun! We walked to a nearby park, got our pre-planned pictures, and then were able to get some really precious candid pictures of my nephew, brother, and his wife going down the playground slide. We also got some incredibly cute pictures of my baby niece, sister, and brother-in-law. I'm not including the family pics here since they're pics with kids, but just know that they are amazing! Brittany and Liv did such a good job making funny noises to get our niece and nephew to laugh, and as a result, put the rest of us at ease as well. Taking pictures as a couple was also really fun! I am not someone who naturally feels comfortable getting my photo taken, but I just had the best time! They made it a laid-back, and creative experience, where we could all kind of have ideas and try them out. At one point I was like "I like this lamp post, can we get a picture with it?" and they were like "yes!" My husband was also having a lot of pre-wedding jitters, and Liv was somehow magically able to put him at ease. A thing I didn't really think about before the wedding is that taking couples pictures is some of the only "alone" time you get on your wedding day. Brittany and Liv made this time really special, bringing positive energy, affirmation, and creativity, while creating space for us to treasure our time together as a couple. Finally, they did an incredible job capturing the ceremony and reception. I can't even really put into words what they managed to do. They captured the small details- the facial expressions, the moments where everyone's laughing because of an intentional joke or an unintentional but charming mess up. They captured us as a couple, but also the community we were lucky enough to gather around us. There's something intangible about the magic you create at a wedding, that they somehow bottled it up and got it into these photos, which we will treasure for the rest of our lives.

The photographer, Jonathan, and his assistant, were absolutely amazing. They arrived early, were flexible and really accommodating to our vision. They also really hustled! They took advantage of every spare moment they had to get additional photos, and kept us on schedule super tightly. They even carried around things like bottles of water for me (the bride) as we took lots of photos in the hot upper floor of the venue. Many guests also mentioned how beautifully the photos turned out. However, we did have an issue in which, due to an injury to the editor's hand, we did not receive our photos in the agreed-upon timeframe. Had we been informed of this delay ahead of time, we would not have had any issue just waiting a bit longer. The main concern was that we weren't alerted of this delay until after the initial deadline had passed. We did request a discount due to this, which they accommodated. And the photos did still turn out amazing!

When I was in the throes of wedding planning over a year ago, I was reaching out to vendors and putting payments down for June 2, 2024, and was crossing my fingers my deployed fiancé would even be able to attend, thanks to his unpredictable schedule. Amidst the stress (and borderline panic attacks!!) I was having because of that, I was also receiving a lieu of impersonal emails with quotes from photographers. When I got the email back from Jessica, she was the only one who answered with excitement and personality, and gave me a sense that this was supposed to be FUN. All this wedding planning was a very lucky sort of stress, and she didn’t make me feel like I was just some box to check off in her inbox— she was personable and friendly, and I liked her immediately. For the course of the year, Jessica and I kept up with eachother with texts, messages, and Instagram— and I felt like she was already a friend when June arrived. Even after her 12 hour journey to Virginia, she was full of energy and ready to go. She helped adjust some coordination timelines and caught things that I otherwise wouldn’t have. She hung out with my rambunctious family all weekend, witnessing our love and laughter, WIDE range of personalities, and even some sisterly tiffs. Honestly, she whole-heartedly became part of our crew. She ran everything past me when it came to details. Duke and I are not people who are comfortable in front of a camera, and I LOVED having her specifically tell us what to do to look good, while still feeling incredibly relaxed and natural around her. Duke and I kept saying she had Jedi powers the way she was able to flip cameras, batteries and equipment seamlessly. I’m writing this while in the airport leaving our honeymoon, and not only did Duke and I, and our families fall in love with Jessica— I still have guests reaching out to me via text to tell me how they hit it off with her on their own, how impressed they were with her ethic, or how they loved pictures from our sneak peek (eeeek!) I am not a girl who naturally feels pretty or comfortable in front of a camera. Jessica gave me the gift of finally experiencing both of those things on our special day. I felt beautiful and at ease. She captured the bridal portraits that I hope my great grandkids will put in their family tree projects for school one day, some of Dukes family and mine meeting for the first time, friends dancing, and our grandparents mingling and giving us their love. Duke and I knew our big white wedding would be our one chance to have everyone we love in one place. We are well aware of the rarity in that, and the fact that we don’t have much longer with some of those people we love. We’re well aware that these are the photos Duke and I will be looking at with our grandchildren when we’re old and grey, thinking about “the good ol’ days.” These photos are all we will have left one day of the people we love so fiercely, and these versions of ourselves. We will endlessly be grateful for Jessica of her effort and the labor that went into photographing a weekend like ours. She captured every single aspect of us and those we love, and above all us, gave us the gift of memory. 3 Faith and Duke
