I had the pleasure of working with Hope Lodge Venue recently as a wedding photographer and I can say they are a fantastic choice . Their communication style is incredibly responsive, helpful, and enthusiastic - they go above and beyond to ensure every detail is taken care of. Great quality of work for a the value ; the venue is open, clean, bright, and airy, creating the perfect atmosphere for a wedding or big event . One memorable example was when the staff dressed up along with the Gatsby-themed wedding, truly immersing themselves in the couple's vision. My only suggestion would be for them to potentially expand their parking area in the future, but overall, Hope Lodge Venue is an excellent option for couples seeking a beautiful, well-managed wedding venue and one they could decorate and make their own.

The venue had a few hiccups, but overall we had a lovely reception there. The outdoor space was the highlight - truly gorgeous for photos. Communication on coordination was a bit spotty at times, but the maître d', Sergio, was a god send and stepped in to ensure things flowed smoothly. The food was phenomenal, as well! So many of our guests shared it was the best wedding food they’d ever had. We did have both our bridal attendants provided by the venue disappear on us shortly after we arrived, which was inconvenient since we would have paid for our own attendants if we knew that would be the case. While parts of the indoor space is dated, it worked out beautifully with some creative decor. When weighing everything in, the Woodwinds was a spectacular venue!

We recently had our wedding at Water’s Edge Resort and Spa, and overall, it was a beautiful and memorable day. The setting is absolutely stunning, with a gorgeous waterfront backdrop that sets the tone for a romantic, coastal celebration. The Venue: The venue itself is the real star. The ceremony space overlooking the water is breathtaking, and our guests were wowed. The Royal Ballroom was elegant and clean, though it felt a bit tight for our 200-person guest count and had a small dance floor. The staff did a great job setting up. One of the biggest positives was their effort to keep our ceremony outside despite some tricky weather. Plan B changed multiple times throughout the day, but they were flexible and made a call two hours before—allowing us to have a lovely outdoor ceremony on the patio. The Coordination Team: This is where things fell short. The onsite wedding coordinators did their jobs but offered little more. They operate within a narrow set of rules, and most non-standard requests were met with a “no.” If you want anything custom, you’ll need to go to the head of sales. We strongly recommend hiring an independent wedding planner. The coordinators are not substitutes for a full-service planner and do not assist with day-of timelines. Don’t expect personalized guidance—you’ll need to advocate for yourself throughout. Tasting & Food: The tasting experience was one of the low points. The food was poorly executed, and it left us anxious. That said, the kitchen completely redeemed itself on the big day. The wedding food was delicious, well-presented, and received many compliments from our guests. We’re grateful they delivered when it mattered most. Pricing & Contracts: Expect extra charges for nearly everything. Review your contract closely—Water’s Edge adheres strictly to what’s written, even when verbal communication during planning differs. This added stress and confusion. Their team is extremely contract-focused, so nothing should be assumed unless it’s clearly in writing. Hotel & Room Block: The hotel is beautiful but expensive. Managing the room block was more difficult than anticipated, and we were quoted one rate, but our final contract reflected another. This required a lot of back-and-forth to sort out and added unnecessary friction to the planning process. Final Thoughts: Despite the challenges, we had a truly wonderful wedding day. The venue was stunning, our guests had an amazing time, and everything ran smoothly thanks to their structured operation. Water’s Edge is definitely a “wedding factory”—they’re efficient, but not especially flexible or tailored. If you go in with clear expectations, a strong outside planner, and a willingness to advocate for what you want, you can absolutely have the wedding of your dreams here. We’re grateful for the memories and happy with how everything turned out in the end.

Essex Steam Train & Riverboat

5.0

Essex, CT
  • Up to 230 guests
  • Select services
  • Outdoor & indoor

We make our beautiful facilities, equipment, and catering staff available for weddings, reunions, meetings, and other events. We have four beautiful indoor/outdoor event spaces to choose from, all different and unique in their own way!

Why you'll love this venue

  • Has a dance floor for celebration
  • Provides lighting and sound
  • Space for a large guest list

Venue considerations

  • Venue feels large for events with small guest lists
  • Not for you if you are looking for something nontraditional
  • Not wheelchair accessible
I have loved coming to the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat museum since I was a child so when my husband and I got engaged, we knew we had to get married here. It was such a magical venue and was reasonably priced. They truly don't try to nickel-and-dime you like a lot of other wedding venues, they just want you to have a good experience. The bridal suite was a beautifully decorated air-conditioned train car. We also decided to add on a roundtrip steam train ride down to the CT river and a steamboat cruise as our cocktail hour (honestly didn't cost as much as you'd think...). Our reception was inside the hall and was perfectly air-conditioned and decorated. We did a buffet option and the food was good! If you decide to get married outside, just remember that it IS an active train yard so make sure your officiant has a microphone. Meredith and Tyler were very easy to work with while planning the event. I highly recommend getting married here. Oh, and your photos will look INSANE.

  • Designed for grand celebrations
  • Raw space for complete customization

Venue considerations

  • Not for you if you are drawn to more unconventional venues
  • No on-premises lodging options
  • No dedicated areas for getting ready
We had our small family wedding at First UCC of Milford and couldn’t have been happier with our choice. The natural light in the sanctuary is gorgeous, and having the option between a small chapel and larger sanctuary was incredibly helpful - we ultimately chose the larger space, which had the traditional center aisle that was perfect for our ceremony. Reverend Adam and Reverend Ashley are both amazing to work with. Adam was thoughtful, flexible, and supportive throughout the planning process, helping us figure out exactly what we needed for our intimate family celebration. He even connected us with an organist, which made the ceremony feel truly special. Practical details: There’s plenty of parking, and the church hall downstairs has AC and a kitchen, which is great for receptions or gatherings. The sanctuary itself isn’t air conditioned, but that wasn’t an issue for our June wedding. The location is unbeatable for photos! The iconic Milford town green with its bridge and duck pond provided stunning backdrops - our photographer was thrilled with the options, and those spots have been treasured by generations of couples. So many friends who saw our pictures had taken their own in the same spot, some over 50 years ago. Working with this church was such a meaningful experience that I have since become a member. We are so grateful our wedding brought us to this wonderful community.

I can’t even put into words how special my wedding was thanks to The Lake House (but I’m going to try lol). I found this location on Zola and when I contacted the owner, Paul, it was like speaking to an old friend even though we had never met before. He is so sincere and thoughtful and has the best tips and tricks for wedding planning. I never hired a wedding planner and I was a little overwhelmed in the beginning of my planning process but Paul was there every step of the way for me. He answered all my emails filled with dumb questions and he advised me in the best way. Carole, my wedding coordinator at the venue, was an absolute gem as well and made things so easy. My wedding was 11/16/24 (the last wedding of their season!) and I still have guests telling me how fantastic everything was. Especially the FOOD. I truly dream about the filet mignon and tiramisu we had about twice a week lol. I can’t say enough amazing things about this venue. I would have my next birthday party here just so I can see Paul and Carole again and eat more of the delicious food lol. The location is GORGEOUS and they truly made my wedding the best night of my entire life.

I had my wedding ceremony and reception at The Hills Labor Day weekend of 2022. The venue is beautiful and perfectly manicured. The new pergola was a nice touch. The reception space is beautiful from the minute you walk in the doors. The views in the main room are stunning and breathtaking. The gold chairs and high ceilings make the room feel very grand and are a great setting for a wedding. Frank was very accommodating to all our requests. Allison was amazing- she anticipated and exceeded our needs and wants from the early stages of planning to providing helpful updates during the party. Everything ran smoothly and was handled eloquently. The staff was attentive and friendly. The Bartenders were smiling all night long. All my guests were complimenting the delicious food and gorgeous venue. The bridal suite was perfect for me and my wedding party to gather ourselves before the ceremony. The aesthetic and decor was very modern and clean. I had the best time at My wedding and I’m very Grateful to The Hills management & staff for providing the perfect space for us to celebrate with our loved ones. 10/10 highly recommend!

We held a New Year’s Eve wedding on 12/31/24, and wow—we cannot thank Sarah and Julia enough for such an amazing night. Our guests are still talking about the wedding, using words like epic, incredible, and amazing—and it truly was. We had a clear vision that required close communication with the staff, and once we shared that vision, they made it happen seamlessly. They even timed the music and smoke perfectly for our entrance into the venue. The venue is clean and offers so much room for decorating, both electronically and within the space itself. The attached hotels were also a great touch, making it easy and convenient for guests to stay overnight. Thank you for giving us the best memories of our wedding day. Thank you again for making it the best night of our lives. Bravo! Darren and Dan

Less than a week ago, my now Wife and I hosted hundreds of our most near and dear loved ones for a wedding experience that was absolutely impeccable. From the beginning, Angela and her staff were attentive and supportive of our entire vision and dreams. Our goal was to recreate the authentic Italian wedding experience that we have come to enjoy in our travels, here in Connecticut-and the Grand Oak Villa delivered! The food is absolutely authentic and delicious, the acoustics and atmosphere are amazing & the decor and lighting is elegant. We would give anything to invite our friends and family to celebrate with us again, and Grand Oak Villa is where it would be. After trips to other different venues, I knew East Wind was for us. The venue was rustic and beautiful. Jen McLaughlin, our sales rep, was awesome and consistent throughout the whole process. Very sweet, pleasant, communicative, prompt and was reliable regarding concerns I have. Fast forward to our wedding day, 12/8, it was perfect and everything I could ask for. Reid, the maitre d, took over and made everything seamless. Placed all my DIY decorations as they should be and more, turned my vision to reality. Very mellow guy. Patient, sweet, chill and very attentive to our needs. Our wedding party loved him! And Barbara, our bridal attendant, what a doll! Very nurturing presence. She was very lowkey and whatever I asked help for, it was magically done right away. I asked for food or drink, done. Honestly, all the staff had been awesome to us, including the bartenders, the waiters. It was perfect, none that gave us headaches at all. And the food. Our guests couldn't stop raving about it. It was delicious and never ending. I wanted to attend to any wedding at East Wind just to have a great dinner and experience everything again. Thankful for this bunch! ️️
