Opening Brooklyn Girl Bakery was the culmination of years working as a pastry chef and cake decorator in the Philly suburbs. As someone who loved all things wedding related, I decided to venture out on my own so I could focus all my energy making beautiful and delcious cakes.

Ever since I was 7 years old, I told everyone that when I grew up I was going to be a chef. I grew up with that idea and never considered a back up plan. I pursued that dream and attended culinary school. Funnily enough, I never had much interest in baking. I wanted to be the chef and owner of a restaurant one day. After graduating and working in restaurants, I was crushed to see that a handful of places weren't sending out fresh, non frozen foods. So, I would go home and start baking, just for fun. Hello! My name is Ava. I’m a wife, mother to six and a cake and cookie artist. My grandma was a custom cake artist in NY for many years before she passed in 2018 so I grew up watching her create works of art. I would like to say that baking and creating runs in my blood and is not only a hobby of mines, but a true passion.

I am a self-taught macaron baker since fall 2018. When I was introduced to macarons and saw how versatile, pretty and flavorful macarons could be, I decided to perfect the technique so I could provide them at the weddings, showers and birthdays for all my friends. As my experience grew I started receiving requests from people all over Pittsburgh to add a unique twist to their sweetest moments, so much so that in September of 2021, I quit my corporate job to bake full-time! I absolutely love being able to enhance a wedding, baby shower or bridesmaid proposal with some rare, scrumptious treats that everyone is delighted to see and taste.

Clay’s Bakery opened its doors on October 1, 1990 by Bill and Denise Bones, alongside Denise’s mother Barbara Clark, who retired to Florida in 1997. To this day, the bakery is still owned and operated by the Bones family. The bakery was named in honor of Denise’s father Clayton Earl Clark, III who passed away the year before opening the shop.
