Channing Johnson Photography

I have a photojournalism degree from the oldest and most prestigious journalism school in the country. TIME Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News and World Report have all hired me to photograph assignments for them. Whether I’m capturing moments for a national audience or for a single family, I draw on my storytelling background to honor the truth in all moments big and small. My job isn’t to create beauty. My job is to see the beauty already there. All work is personal work.

I won’t ask you to “do that again”. I won’t ask you to pretend to put on shoes. I won’t ask you to pretend anything. I don’t rearrange rooms or alter anything before I release the shutter. However, I do pay attention. I do anticipate. And I definitely take a burst of images every time I see emotion. I take my cues from the people in front of my camera not the wedding industry. Your relationships deserve to be documented in their full imperfect perfection. You deserve that. The memories of your loved ones deserve that. I’m here to see you and the people you love as you all are.

Finding the right photographer was one of the most difficult parts of our planning. We wanted a true documentary style—someone who captures the energy of the moment rather than forcing 'traditionally posed' shots. And portfolio after portfolio featured the traditional posed shots. I felt instantly seen & understood when I read this on his website: "People have mentioned they don’t recall me present at their weddings. A mountain of photographic evidence suggests otherwise, but that’s exactly the way I want it." And after our two days of events, I cannot emphasize enough how true this sentiment truly is! Channing excelled at two completely different scenarios for us. First, he captured our intimate ceremony outdoors in the fresh snow and sun, followed by drinks at Contessa. The photos are bright, crisp, and perfectly framed despite the short window of time. I'm blown away by the variety of shots for what turned out to be a 6-minute ceremony. The photos of drinks at Contessa are also amazing. He captured so many moments, and I'm so glad he was there. Then, he covered our 100-person party at Hobgoblin. This was a complete 180—a dark, multi-hour event—yet Channing worked his magic. The gallery came back vibrant and high-energy, perfectly capturing the vibe of the room without ever feeling intrusive. He has an incredible eye for candid moments. Plus, he’s a true professional: great communication, flexible, and he delivered our gallery in just 21 days (well ahead of his 5-week estimate). The easy-access gallery and printing options were the icing on the cake. I 100% recommend him and would work with him again in a heartbeat.

When researching a wedding photographer, my husband and I knew we wanted photos that would last well beyond our wedding day. At the same time, we didn’t want taking photos to consume too much of the day. We found Channing, and he was beyond perfect. He was everything we wanted in a photographer and so much more. He was non-intrusive while capturing moments, made the process quick and easy (even for my husband, who’s not big on taking photos), and delivered work that was better than we ever could have imagined. Our photos are still the most talked-about part of our wedding, and we’re so happy we invested in Channing. Because of his documentary-style photography, we truly get to relive our wedding day every time we look at them.

We got married in December and recently received our full gallery from Channing! My husband and I are SO happy with all the photos, every time I look through I find a new favorite. Part of the reason we picked Channing Johnson Photography was because we really liked his portfolio and his ability to capture moments that show the feeling of the day. He delivered some really great posed portraits, but my favorites were the more candid shots, or the moments he got photos in between the more posed images. My husband and I are not two people who feel particularly comfortable in front of the camera, and the whole experience was great, Channing made everything feel very normal and not forced. Definitely recommend!
